The Department of Education began its consultation on the policy proposals contained in Every School a Good School: The Way Forward for Special Educational Needs and Inclusion on 10th August 2009 and originally planned to run this until 31st October. Following representations from parents, schools and others, the Minister has decided to further extend the period to 31 January 2010, so that as many individuals and organisations have as much time as possible to consider and respond to the proposals.
The consultation document, Equality Impact Assessment and consultation response booklet can be viewed at www.deni.gov.uk, under the 'Consultations' section. Word and pdf versions are available to download, in both English and Irish. Hard copies of all of the consultation documents can be obtained by contacting the Special Education and Inclusion Review Team on 028 9127 9762.
PEAT is deeply concerned about the impact the proposed changes will have on children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Whilst we recognize there are many difficulties with the current Special Educational Needs Framework we believe that the proposed changes will actually make matters worse and that parents will find it even more difficult to secure adequate educational provision for their child(ren).

HOW YOU CAN HELP
Please assist PEAT in resisting these changes. We will bring a formal response but it is vital that parents make their own views known. You can contact the PEAT office for further information on 028 90324882.
